Dad Grass Flower vs. Mom Grass Flower

Why Does My CBD and CBG Flower Look Different?

In simple mathematical terms: Mom Grass = CBG. Dad Grass = CBD. But aside from the fact that Mom Grass flower is rich with CBG and Dad Grass Flower is rich with CBD, there are some subtle differences in the look, feel and flavor of the flower itself.

The whole “birds and bees” talk sort of applies to flower, too. Because of their genetic traits, Dad Grass and Mom Grass are just … different. Over the last couple years, our growers have cultivated a new strain of hemp with higher concentrations of CBG, which is primarily what delivers Mom Grass’s unique effects and benefits. But it also means that the flower often looks different than, say, a Dad Grass flower with high concentrations of CBD.

An Inside Look At CBG Flower

In general, Mom Grass CBG Flower is less “sticky-icky”, a little drier and breaks apart easier than Dad Grass CBD Flower. And, because of its genetic makeup, CBG Flower has less evident trichomes (which are the unicellular or multicellular appendages that act as an extension of the above-ground epidermal cells in plants). In layman terms, they’re the shiny brown hairs you’ve come to expect on Dad Grass CBD Flower.

You can thank terpenoids for that funky smell you know and love. These mellow molecules might pack a powerful punch, but they're more subtle and scientific than you might think. Terpenes are the essential plant oils that give scent to plants of all kinds: fruits, flowers, trees and hemp. They provide a wide range of aromatics ranging from floral and earthy to musky and citrusy. In fact, there are over 500 or so terpenes produced in hemp plants alone.

Our CBG is rich in the terpene Bisabolol. Bisa-who now? Bisabolol (also known as levomenol) is a terpene that is also the primary constituent of the essential oil from German chamomile, which means Mom Grass Flower has subtle aromatics of our favorite bedtime remedy. Not only does CBG smell great, it also carries some awesome benefits. Bisabolol is thought to have anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties.

A Peak Under Dad's Hood

Our Dad Grass Flower is also rich in Bisabolol (because we just can't get enough), but has higher concentrations of the terpene Caryophyllene. This molecule is a little more common that its chamomile-scented counterpart, and is a constituent of essential oils like clove, pepper, basil, rosemary, hops and our beloved marijuana plant. When it comes to the spicy terpenes, Caryophyllene takes the cake. It has a deep scent profile with some connoisseurs saying they get hits of herbs and wood in our grass.

Caryophyllene is extra unique because of its ability to bind to CB2 receptors within our endocannabinoid system, which means this incredible terpene has a slew of additional medical benefits. Much like Bisabolol, Caryophyllene has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But research also suggests that it may also help ease symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Mom And Dad Play Better Together

Even though CBD and CBG flower are similar in many ways, there are certainly some differences in the way they make you feel. In general, we say that Dad Grass CBD is great for winding down, whereas Mom Grass CBG is the perfect pick-me up. But because of the entourage effect, the benefits of CBD and CBG are heightened when blended together. In other words, they bring out the best in one another.

Here's an expert tip: you can absolutely build a custom joint by hand-blending our Mom Grass CBG Flower with a THC flower of your choice (and hey, feel free to throw some Dad Grass in there while you’re at it). By mixing together flowers that are high in the key cannabinoids (THC, CBG and CBD), you’re likely to kick the entourage effect into high gear. Plus, mixing CBG flower with THC flower may also help you diminish some of the negative effects you experience with the high-test THC weed you get at the dispensary, simply because the net amount of psychoactive compound (THC) is diluted. We can’t guarantee you won’t get couch-locked, but it’s helped us get through countless parties and social occasions in the last couple years.

And hey, if you prefer to have your hands a little more idle, check out our Mom Grass CBG Pre-Rolls and Dad Grass CBD Pre-Rolls. Our joints are jam-packed with the same awesome benefits as our loose flower - and are all dressed up and ready to go.
