Biosync Industries was founded in 2018 and has evolved into a biodynamic design, development and consulting group headquartered in the heart of the Pacific Northwest and nestled within Oregon's beautiful Umpqua Valley wine country.
It started as a small backyard medical cannabis garden testing out automation growing methods and natural fertilizer combinations. The agriculture version of a garage band if you will. I was extremely intrigued by the cannabis plant for the human health and wellness benefits, but also the plant’s ability to heal the land and high potential as a construction commodity.
With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, we scaled up our evolving backyard technology system and became one of the first farms to grow hemp at an acreage level and one of the few to do it with biodynamic principals.
In addition to the boutique hemp specialty, we have begun the process to incorporate Grass Fed cattle, Mycology, Microgreens, and a camping/ wellness experience on the farm with the goal of developing a self sufficient health and wellness community.
You're the founder of Biosync. How did you get into all this?
I grew up on a cattle ranch in a small Oregon town before studying at the University of Oregon. I obtained a Bachelors of Architecture and subsequently an MBA in sustainable development. The idea of Biosync Industries began while I was working and living in London and witnessed the massive disconnect between humans and natural ecosystems. After being radically inspired on a surfing and eco retreat in the Dominican Republic, I decided it was time to start something fresh. My passion to synchronize natural systems with technology to create inspiring spaces led me to move away from traditional architectural practices and establish a farm to further my studies directly in nature.
How and why do you do what you do?
Biosync Industries was founded with three primary goals:
- Help heal the land by designing biological synchronicities.
- Help heal the community and inspire them to live their best life.
- Have a rad time doing it.
We utilize biodynamic methodologies in our production in order to grow a superior boutique product. This includes:
-
Free Range Cattle: Cattle mob graze the field in the offseason and inject beneficial microbes and natural nutrients into the soil to help build up a strong biological system for higher quality plants.
-
Zero Pesticides: Instead of pesticides, marigolds and other flower species deter pests while supporting beneficial pollinators. Additionally, lady bugs, lacewings and other predator bugs help control caterpillars, mites and aphids.
-
No synthetic fertilizers: We inject compost teas and mycelium waste into the field to provide extra nutrients and microbes into the living soil.
-
Cover Crops and Mulch: Instead of toxic plastic mulch we use cover crops to protect the soil and plants from weeds and the hot summer sun. An alfalfa mulch also helps with water retention and injects more beneficial nutrients into the soil that support the bloom phase. We are currently doing research and testing on mycology systems, micro greens, fruits and honey bees to evaluate as potential additions down the road.
