Vertosa Fast-Acting Nanotech

Time To Put On Your Lab Coats!

Never heard of Vertosa? That's ok. They don't get out much. Because they've been busy in the lab helping us crack the code to a better gummy. Their role in our mission: Faster onset times, greater efficacy and higher bioavailability. In layman's terms: we wanted our Gummies to be the best of the best, so we partnered with the biggest brains in the biz.

Vertosa uses nanotechnology (that's really, really small technology, FYI) to create smooth and fast-acting hemp oil emulsions that deliver more of the magical benefits of our favorite plant. Needless to say, Gummies are better when they’re backed by science.

So what's an emulsion?

An emulsion is a stable, dispersed homogenous mixture of two or more liquids that are normally immiscible. Think fat-in-water emulsions like hollandaise sauce. That's right chefs, we're heading to brunch for this mayo-fueled analogy. Normally, when you combine egg yolks, lemon juice and butter, the fat separates and forms a super gross float-illa on top of the mixture (and culinary interns start crying). But when you whisk egg yolks and lemon juice over a double boiler and oh-so-slowly add in butter, it allows the egg yolks to act as an emulsifier. That means that the egg yolks have time to coat those fatty butter droplets and helps keep them dispersed in the mix to stabilize and thicken the sauce. Et voilà! Smooth and velvety hollandaise sauce thanks to natural emulsion! Next you just need to learn how to poach an egg and call on your favorite Canadian for some bacon.

Now we love Eggs Benedict as much as the next guy, but we thought our gummies should be a little less... eggy. Luckily, Vertosa uses surfactants as their emulsifying agent. Let's keep this simple. Surfactant = surface-active agent. A compound that reduces the surface tension of a liquid in which it is dissolved, like eggs in a hollandaise sauce.

Here’s what our partners over at Vertosa have to say about their process:

“Surfactant molecules are amphiphilic, meaning they contain hydrophilic (water-loving, or polar) heads and hydrophobic (oil-loving, or nonpolar) tails. Surfactants are attracted to both polar and nonpolar compounds, acting as a “bridge” between oil and water."

Dad Grass-Vertosa-Emulsion-Breakdown

"Oil droplets are processed and broken down into small sizes, and surfactants then wrap around the tiny oil droplets. Once fully encompassed around the oil droplets, the surfactants will maintain stability for a certain period of time. The relative stability of emulsion is predicted on the quality and ratio of ingredients that make up that emulsion. A quality emulsion system maintains its stability and will not coalesce over time, maintaining its homogeneity.”

Get it? Using surfactants to emulsify hemp oil and water breaks down cannabinoids like CBD, CBG and CBN and evenly and consistently disperses them in the solution. Imagine your body is a chain link fence. Think of traditional distillate gummies like beach balls (where there is one unique cannabinoid like CBD or THC). No matter how hard you throw a beach ball at a fence, it won’t make it through to the other side. Thanks to Vertosa nanotechnology emulsions, the cannabinoid molecules in Dad Grass CBD, CBG or CBN Gummies are more like a bunch of tiny marbles. When you throw them at a fence, they make it through the holes in the fence because they're so perfectly and evenly small. That's a long way to say that Dad Grass gummies have higher efficacy, increased bioavailability and faster onset times, so it's easier for your body to absorb all that hemp-y goodness.

Bioavailability and why it's so important

Let’s talk about bioavailability, baby. Bioavailability (bi·o·a·vail·a·bil·i·ty /ˌbīōˌəvāləˈbilədē/) is  “the proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced to to body and so is able to have an active effect.” Woof. Let’s break that down.

When it comes to cannabinoids, bioavailability refers to the percentage of this CBD, CBG or CBN that is actually absorbed by the body. A lot of brands will claim that their products contain tons of cannabinoids. And a lot of people think that the more milligrams they consume, the better they will feel. But what really matters is how much actually gets absorbed in your bloodstream to produce the desired effect (whether that be chilling out, recovery or sleep). High bioavailability is good. Low bioavailability is bad, assuming you don't want to be pissing away your hard-earned dollars!
